To mark their 5th anniversary, GOMA – Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art – is hosting a major exhibition by quirky Japanese contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama.
Entitled Yayoi Kusama: Look Now, See Forever, the exhibition includes sculptures, paintings and large-scale installations that show Kusama’s most recent work.
Ranging from enormous, vibrantly colored, dotty flowers and oversized pumpkins to detailed abstract paintings, Kusama work is playful, joyous and exciting. Loved by adults and children alike, the exhibition also includes an immersive color installation called Dots Obsession that, with calibrated mirrors, creates the illusion of infinite space. Visitors can interact with Kusama’s work by adding colorful dots to The obliteration room installation.
Now in her 80s, the wonderfully flamboyant Kusama has been an artist since the 1950s. Recently the subject of a major retrospective at Tate Modern, Kusama is an internationally acclaimed senior artist and her work in performance, filmmaking, painting, sculpture, fashion and poetry has influenced several generations of artists.
Other exhibitions currently showing at GOMA include Drawn to Screen: Graphic Novels, Comics & Serials; Matisse: Drawing Life and, at the Children’s Art Centre, we miss you magic land!, a gorgeous installation made out of sugar, glitter, clay and mirrors that is a real hit with the kids.
Yayoi Kusama: Look Now, See Forever runs until 11 March 2012. Admission is free.
